BIS hallmarking guarantees the purity of gold jewellery. Here is everything you need to know before you buy.
BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) hallmarking is the official certification of gold purity in India, mandatory since June 2021 for jewellers selling gold articles.
What Does a Hallmark Contain?
Since the introduction of HUID (Hallmark Unique ID), every piece of hallmarked jewellery carries:
- BIS logo (the triangle mark)
- Purity in fineness (e.g., 916 for 22K, 750 for 18K)
- HUID — a six-character alphanumeric code unique to each article

How to Verify
Visit the BIS Care app or the BIS HUID portal and enter the HUID printed on your jewellery. The portal will confirm the hallmarking centre, purity, and date.
