IGI vs GIA: Which Diamond Certificate Should You Trust?
Both IGI and GIA are globally recognised. Understanding the difference helps you make a smarter purchase.
A diamond certificate (also called a grading report) is an independent assessment of a diamond's 4 Cs — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat weight. It is issued by a gemological laboratory, not the jeweller selling the stone.
GIA — Gemological Institute of America
Founded in 1931, GIA created the 4 Cs grading system. Its grading is considered the global gold standard, particularly for high-value solitaires. GIA reports tend to be conservative — a "G" from GIA is reliably a G.
IGI — International Gemological Institute
IGI, founded in Antwerp in 1975, has the largest global network of laboratories and is the leading certifier for lab-grown diamonds. IGI grades are broadly trusted, though historically seen as slightly more lenient than GIA.
Which Should You Choose?
For high-value natural diamonds, a GIA certificate offers the greatest resale confidence. For lab-grown diamonds and for diamond jewellery where price-to-size ratio matters, IGI-certified stones offer excellent value.
At Mangal & Mangal, every solitaire comes with its original GIA or IGI certificate, and all diamond jewellery is accompanied by an in-house quality assurance card.
